Route 66 › New Mexico
The Land of Enchantment — neon motels, a crystal blue hole & Hollywood’s favorite hotel
The Land of Enchantment. New Mexico stretches Route 66 across 374 miles of dramatic, ever-changing landscape — from the flat eastern plains through the high desert of Albuquerque to the ancient volcanic country near Grants and the Native American cultural heartland around Gallup. Note: New Mexico has two historic alignments. The original 1926 route looped north through Santa Fe; the 1937 re-route went direct to Albuquerque, cutting nearly 100 miles. This guide follows the 1937 alignment. Visit newmexico.org/route-66 for the official state travel guide.
